The Situation
Luther Hospital (Luther Midelfort–Mayo Health System) in Eau Claire, Wisconsin was flooded. The affected area proved far larger than first estimated — roughly 80,000 sq ft versus an initial 15,000 — and while the structure was being dried, the hospital's X-ray film archive began to mold.
What We Did
- Immediately froze the water-damaged X-ray films to stabilize them and halt further damage
- Expanded vacuum freeze-dry capacity from two to six freeze-dryers to handle the volume
- Freeze-dried the entire X-ray archive to preserve the films
- Labeled every file so doctors retained 24-hour access to records throughout the project
- Re-filed all records to their original locations in three days
Result
The X-ray archive was preserved and kept accessible to physicians throughout the project; the structure was dried. The job ran approximately three months.

About 1½ months before, I had purchased two freeze dryers. I bought four more freeze dryers and took all the X-rays and put them in. Because the hospital needed access to the X-rays 24-hours-a-day, we labeled the files so that doctors could just come in and find what they needed at any time. It took us three days, but we re-filed everything back to its original place.
